Rescued female elephant gives birth to a baby

On the early morning of December 22, elephant mom “Yineng” gave birth to a baby in the China Asian Elephant Breeding Base in south Yunnan’s Xishuangbanna. The baby is also a female elephant which weighs 96 kilograms and its body measures 91 centimeters high and 85 centimeter high. Because the temperature was low in the morning, staff members of the breeding base made a fire to warm up the delivery room, and they also prepared bananas and carrots for the mom to help her recover strength. Now with intensive care, both the mom and the baby are in good state.

“Yineng” was rescued by the breeding center in 2005. She is now 16 years old and her newborn baby is the fifth elephant born in the breeding base.(Photo by Dai Zhenghua)
