Farmers in Liming harvest garlic, earning over 100 yuan daily

April is the season of garlic harvesting in Liming township, northwest Yunnan’s Lijiang City, and famers were digging out grown garlic bulbs and packing them up for an agro-company. Liming is a Lisu ethnic settlement.  

Falling under the jurisdiction of Yulong County, Liming makes a good place for growing walnuts, tobacco, garlic and Sichuan peppers. These economical crops have played a significant role in local poverty-alleviation project. 

The garlic business owner Li Bisong hires more than 30 locals during the annual garlic-harvesting season. “Most of them are local housewives in the neighborhood, who can work nearby while taking care of their families,” said Li, who had grown garlic for 12 years in Liming.

63-year-old villager Hou Lihua thinks that garlic-harvesting is relatively easy, and she can earn more than 100 Yuan a day. “It's quite enough for me. I have nothing to worry about in my family,” said Hou. “And by harvesting I can serve as an example of diligence for my grandchildren.” 

Liming contributed to local poverty-relief. In the years of 2014 to 2017, the low-income population in Yulong was reduced by 14,496, with the poverty incidence lowering to 0.62%. On September 29, 2018, Yulong County was removed from the impoverished list by Yunnan provincial government.
