Villagers in Lufeng, central Yunnan’s Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, were recently reported to have discovered a dinosaur fossil exposed on the earth surface. Soon a team of paleontologists from the dinosaur fossil conservation center conducted a research and excavation.

Lufeng is the site of numerous Jurassic dinosaur discoveries, first found there in 1938. The most well-known one is Lufengosaurus, a Jurassic prosauropod, which can be traced back 180 million years ago.

Since the exposed point of the dinosaur fossils is located on the hillside, if the excavation is not organized in time, it will face the risk of natural weathering damage. In order to avoid the risk of natural weathering, Lufeng Dinosaur Fossils Conservation and Research Center promptly carried out rescue excavation of the fossil

As the excavation went on, the true face of the dinosaur gradually emerged to the surface. The high integrity of the dinosaur was more than 70 percent, and the experts on the scene were amazed constantly.

"It should be a type of giant Lufengosaurus, and judging by its tail and thigh bones, its body length should be about eight meters," said Wang Tao, head of the Center.

It is very rare in the world that the preservation of the fossils is more than 70%. If the head of vertebra of the dinosaur can be found in the following excavation, then it is a national treasure, which will also be a hit in the world dinosaur excavation history.
