Sericulture prospers in Zhanyi, Qujing city
Where does silk come from? Silk is produced by silkworm cocoons, which can be woven into textiles. The production of silk originated in China in the Neolithic period.
Based in Zhanyi District of east Yunnan’s Qujing City, sericulture and silk craftsmanship of Panjiang Town started in 1960s. After half a century of unrelenting efforts, now Zhanyi has become strong in sericulture. It is one of the top ten sericulture hubs in Yunnan, and the quality of silkworm cocoon ranks 1st across the province.
Traditionally essential for the economy of rural regions, silk-making encompasses planting mulberry, raising silkworms, unreeling silk, making thread, and designing and weaving fabric. It has been one of the important ways to boost local famers’ income and rural revitalization at large.
