200,000 ray-finned fish fries bred in Yunnan
A research team led by Kunming Institute of Fisheries Sciences has domesticated more than 200,000 fries of the ray-finned fish (anabarilius alburnops) over the past years.
Anabarilius alburnops is one of the endemic species of the Dianchi Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan. In 2013, researchers discovered a never-seen-before ray-finned fish, which was later confirmed to be anabarilius alburnops by zoologists.
To protect the endangered indigenous fish, the Kunming institute set up in 2017 a 15-member team to study the biological habits and artificial breeding of the species. And their efforts in the ensuing four years have yielded the 200,000 fries, half of which were released into the Dianchi lake in September.
In the future, the team will continue to conduct in-depth research to protect the indigenous fish and help restore the ecological environment of the lake basin.
