Yunnan to stage side events at part two of COP15

COP15 Part Two

The second part of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) will be held in the Canadian city of Montreal from Dec 7 to 19.

With the theme of "Ecological Civilization — Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth", the meeting aims to reach a decision on the “post-2020 global biodiversity framework”, which will be an overall and strategic document for global biodiversity governance before 2030 or even longer.

During the second part of COP15, a China Pavilion will be set up at the main meeting venue, with 26 side events staged concurrently. Among other things, the days of December 7 and December 15-18 will be dedicated to Yunnan, host province of the first part of COP15.

By then, the delegation of Yunnan provincial government and other working teams will hold in Montreal the side events, Yunnan exhibition, Yunnan-themed days, and more.

Regional Biodiversity Conservation and Cooperation

The Xishuangbanna side event will invite three experts to make keynote speeches about the fascinating story of Asian elephant protection and rescue, success in the access and benefit-sharing (ABS) of genetic resources in Xishuangbanna, ancient tea trees protection and sustainable utilization.

The side event will show a wonderful Xishuangbanna with rich biodiversity, abundant ecological culture, complete ecological system, excellent ecological construction and ecological industry development.

The Honghe side event will share the miracle of the harmonious Hani farming culture that features a 4-element ecosystem (forest-village-terrace-water system). The Hani rice terraces have been maintained for a millennium by local in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture.

The side event aims to provide insights for global conservation of the terraced fields and the biodiversity.

This meeting is hosted by the Forestry and Grassland Administration of Yunnan Province, with the theme of "Conserving Species with Extremely Small Populations and Biodiversity". Five cases of endangered species protection in Yunnan will be shared with aims of curbing global species loss and building a community of life on Earth with harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

Part two of COP15 is a special multilateral diplomatic event to be held abroad by the Chinese government.

Yunnan province and Kunming city, both of which contributed a lot in part one of COP15, will again shoulder the mission and contribute even more to global biodiversity conservation.
