Menglian - A good place to find

Yet another wonderful place to discover in Yunnan is Menglian. That is precisely what the homophonic pronunciation of Menglian in the Dai language means - “a good place to find”. In this autonomous county of the Dai, Lahu and Wa ethnic groups (three among the 26 ethnic groups in Yunnan), avocados and coffee abound!

For many, a combination of the two doubles the pleasure of the palate.

Just as in numerous places in China, even as economic development marches on, history is never forgotten. Here in Menglian, a cultural icon stands proud - the Tusi Palace.

An entrance of architectural beauty and functionality greets visitors to the former residence of leaders of a chiefdom.

In the front yard, a variety of plants that sway in the breeze beckon visitors to venture further in.

The clearly labelled plants add to the learning experience of visitors. They could well serve as an introduction or enticement to the neighbouring Xishuangbanna (about 100km away), which is Yunnan’s botanical haven.

Today, the palace is a museum rich in knowledge.

The peacock and their vibrant plumage - sacred to and revered by the Dai people - and the local ethnic language further remind visitors of the harmony of Yunnan.

For enthusiasts, the exhibits in this museum are none short of spectacular.

They include, but are not limited to, the following:

Architectural designs

Costumes

Weaponry

Pattra-Leaf writings/scriptures

Boundary stone

This exhibit is a poignant reminder as it contributes to the sense of place and identity. Now placed in this 10,000 square meters of educational and cultural site, it also serves as a signal to visitors the importance of harmony in the progress of civilisations.

Menglian - like harmony - is indeed a good place to find.
