The China Tourism Day falls yearly on May 19, starting in 2011. The date was chosen to commemorate the day when Chinese ancient travel writer Xu Xiake (1587-1641) began writing his masterpiece "Travel Notes of Xu Xiake".
Highlighting Xu Xiake’s Yunnan tours, which were recorded in around 250,000 Chinese characters and make up 40 percent of Xu travel diaries across China, the publicity event will include a Chinese media tour, a photo exhibition and online promotions, all aiming to dig out the cultural aspects of Yunnan sites and present the special Yunnan lifestyle to the world.
As a typical tourist province, Yunnan has been designated as the major site to mark the 13th China Tourism Day, and the celebration will last from May 19 to 21 mostly in the Heshun ancient town of southwest Yunnan’s Tengchong city, which Xu Xiake used around 30,000 Chinese characters to depict.
