Su Thet Hmue: Media cooperation should involve thinkers, translators

On the occasion of the 2021 China-Myanmar Media Twin City Forum, we interviewed Su Thet Hmue, a senior journalist from Myanmar. With a 10-year working experience, she used to work for Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) and now works for China Media Group (CMG).

She expects that the media forum will bring more opportunities for Myanmar-China media to exchange ideas and cooperate. “Adding the power of think tanks and translation experts to media cooperation will help the people of the two countries deepen mutual understanding and eliminate misunderstandings, so that real news can be spread to readers,” she said.

Myanmar and China are neighbors. In recent years, more and more Chinese food, movies, and TV programs have entered Myanmar and are loved by many young people in Myanmar. She believes that think tanks and translators play an important role in cultural exchanges since the media coverage is still limited for the time being.

For example, she once tried to introduce Covid prevention measures announced by the Chinese government website to Myanmar readers. However, it was all Chinese and no translation. “With the help of think tanks and translation services, it will be more convenient for people to understand the news,” noted Su.

When talking about the forum, she said her peers at Myanmar media shared their participation in the forum in 2019. Such an event is very meaningful for deepening Myanmar-China cooperation.

She is looking forward to the upcoming China-Myanmar Media Twin Cities Forum in 2021. “I hope translation experts and think tanks from the two countries will bring new perspectives and ideas to media cooperation,” said Su.
