A glance of wearable Hani crafts in Mojiang

The Hani people have created the unique costumes in the Longba town of Mojiang Hani autonomous county, southwest Yunnan’s Pu’er city. Nowadays, they decorated the costumes with handicrafts passed down to them from older generations.

Fast spinning requires weavers’ grasp of the technique and years’ of practice. The weaver sits in front of loom, pushing and pulling with hands and feet. The shuttle in her hand moves evenly between the cotton threads, and it is a show of weaving skills.

Then it comes to the dying process. Locals favor the navy-blue dye from indigowoad root. Usually it takes a month because the cloth will be dyed repeatedly until the color is right.

In addition to weaving and dyeing, embroidering is also indispensable for Hani costumes. Zhang Azhen, a 57-year-old villager, has learned embroidery from seniors since girlhood. She created fine embroidery pieces with Mojiang elements.
