Staffers with east Yunnan’s Zhujiangyuan (pearl-river source) nature reserve have, for the first time, captured the image of a leopard with infrared cameras.

Their footage showed the cat under second-class national protection was moving quietly in the bushes near the Dishui Lake in the Maxiong Mountains, the very source of the Pearl River designated in August 1985.

With an annual water flow of 340 billion cubic meters, the 2,214-kilometer Pearl River is the third largest in China, linking up Yunnan province to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao greater bay area.
