Central Yunnan’s Kunming city recently completed China’s first grassland biological disaster monitoring and early warning project, representing another step forward in the national digital and intelligent transformation in this field.

Supported by wireless sensors, the Internet of Things, big data and others, the system can collect, store, calculate and analyze data about prairie pests and hazards, accompanied by human judgement. At the same time, it will display real-time monitoring results as well as disaster forecasting.

The interconnection of information within the system allows for timely prediction, warning and response to grassland biological disasters.

Yunnan has a grassland area of 19,843,300 mu (about 1,322,887 hectares), mainly distributed among autonomous prefectures and cities such as Diqing, Qujing, Honghe, Kunming, and Zhaotong. The system has been operating successfully for three months, detecting 88 species of insects totaling 20.92 million.
