Consumers recently found that durians in Kunming are sold at lower prices, sometimes for less than 40 yuan per kilogram. It is not only because of the increasing production volume in the origin countries but the new purchase and supply channels broadened by the China-Laos Railway.

Since the China-Laos Railway was opened in December 2021, over 1200 different categories of goods have been shipped along the line, ranging from chemical fertilizers and daily necessities to electronics, vegetables, fruits, and flowers.

The cold chain railway trains allowed Southeast Asian tropical fruits such as durian and mangosteen to enter the Chinese market with more cost-effectiveness and convenience.

Apart from goods, passenger transport is also busy. Till Dec 2, the railway had sent 8.5 million passengers, of which 7.3 million were served on the Chinese section and 1.3 million on the Lao section.

The China-Laos Railway also connects the Yunnan localities of Pu’re and Xishuangbanna to the outside world, bringing a peak flow of visitors to tourist destinations along the route.
