Copper smith passes on craftsmanship in Mouding
60-year-old Wang Zixing is known as an inheritor of the copper craftsmanship in Mouding county, central Yunnan’s Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefecture.
Wang learned the craftsmanship from his father following his graduation from junior high school. And his life has been also connected with copper-forging from then on.
A copper plate can be made into an exquisite copper ware through 20 plus steps. “I finished learning the whole set of copper crafts in 10 years,” said Wang. Thanks to many years of in-depth study on copper making skills, Wang’s copper works are popular with consumers.
In 2009, Wang called his son back home to learn the skills from him. As of now, the son has already grasped the basics in copper making, and the family tradition has been passed down from generation to generation.
Copper craftsmanship is time-consuming and labor-intensive, but Wang still hopes to pass the crafts to more young people with interest and keep it thriving.
