The trunk markets have sprung up across China since this autumn. Every evening, all kinds of small goods are displayed in the trunks of private cars, attracting many passersby.
The most popular items are coffee, hamburger, and cakes. Handicrafts, fridge magnets, pet food, and clothes are also quite visible. To run the small business, certificates, such as food business permits, are required, along with booth fees ranging from 200 to 500 yuan per day.
Some vendors claim that the trunk market is only a supplement to their income because business is not always good due to the unstable external environment. It's more about personal interest.
"I like talkative strangers, and it's wonderful to make new friends," said a vendor. "I enjoy the feeling that customers like the coffee I made myself," added another vendor.
The trunk markets provide people with social satisfaction, injecting vitality into the city's nightlife.
