The World Book Day is a day set aside by the UNESCO in 1995 to celebrate copyright, publishing, and reading. The day is observed each year on April 23, and all UN member states are required to observe the day.

For this year's book day, central Yunnan’s Kunming launched the 2023 Spring City Cultural Festival for its residents in 15 libraries and 100 plus cultural centers. With excellent reading materials available for all walks of life in the city, more than 170 activities were held to make reading a daily normal for the public.

In Kunming’s Xishan district, the “Reading for Beauty” event was launched April 23 to increase the public zest in books, and a series of reading activities were carried out at Dianchi Bookstore and Xishan Library, featuring themed book shows and one-stop reading services.

To usher in the special day, Kunming’s Chenggong district held the Molu reading party on April 22, staging textbook dramas and chanting classic literary works. The district will also host another 10 cultural activities for the public, including heritage lectures, new-book reviews, poetry readings and script appreciations.

On the same day, Zhaotong’s Zhenxiong county staged a special reading activity that highlighted local glory during the Long March by the Red Army and selected out the most inspiring books and the most enthusiastic readers. Two days before the occasion, the Yuquan Primary School in Zhaotong’s Suijiang county held a classics reciting by 1,600 pupils.

In central Yunnan’s Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefecture, the CPPCC prefectural committee staged April 23 chanting activities, situational comedies and historical shows for local CPPCC committee members and people from all walks of life.

Similar activities were held in the ten counties across Chuxiong to encourage more zest in reading, and a CPPCC reading room was unveiled at Xinhua Bookstore’s local branch and Chuxiong Library.
