Every morning in the lush green mountains in the Wuliangshan Nature Reserve, choruses of whistles ring to awaken the primeval rainforest in Jingdong county, southwest Yunnan’s Pu’er.

It's the songs of the black crested gibbons, a Yunnan animal species under the state first-class protection and categorized as the critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.

In the nature reserve, groups of western black crested gibbons can be seen playing, singing, foraging or swinging among the trees.

Conservation efforts have seen positive results in recent years. The Management of the Ailao and Wuliang mountains in Jingdong has taken the conservation measures of the gibbons in recent years, and now the area has 104 gibbon groups.
