Jiangcheng ushers in Spring Festival by pounding rice cakes

As the Spring Festival approaches, the Yi people in Bobie village of Jiangcheng county, SW Yunnan’s Pu’er are busy making "pounding baba (new-year rice cakes)".

Firstly, the glutinous rice was put into a steamer for steaming. And then the hot rice is pounded up and down by villagers with a tool called “Duijiu” -- a treadle-operated mortar. This step needs team work. After the glutinous rice is pounded fine, the rice is pressed into balls of various shapes and then dried up in the air.
