Hekou’s chayote exported to Vietnam for 1st time
Chayotes, one of the out-of-season vegetables harvested in early winter in Honehe’s Hekou Yao autonomous county in southeast Yunnan, sell well in international markets.
Because of the tropical climate, the chayotes grown in Hekou can naturally mature in winter and be sold at lower prices in the off-season market. There are now over 1,000 chayote growers in the county, with a total planting area of over 6,000 mu (about 400 hectares) and an yearly output value of 45 million yuan.
Benefited from geographic location, Hekou sells its chayotes to both domestic and overseas markets. It is the first time that vegetables cultivated in Hekou have been exported to Vietnam. The daily export volume exceeded 60 tonnes from last December to January this year.
