Locals in northwest Yunnan’s Lijiang have celebrated the Sanduo Festival at the Baisha Beiyue temple, watching ethnic performances, tasting delicious food and shopping at heritage stores.

The festival is the annual grand festival of the Naxi ethnic group. It falls on the eighth day of the second month on the lunar calendar, or February 27 this year.

A symbol of Naxi tradition, Sanduo is a god who is said to have protected the Naxi people in the myth. So Naxi people mark the Sanduo festival and pray for good luck on that day.

In 2021, the festival was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage by the State Council. Now, it has developed from a folk tradition into a major cultural event in Lijiang.
