Since macadamia was introduced to southwest Yunnan’s Lincang city 30 years ago, the growing area there has reached 2.63 million mu (about 1753.33 square kilometers), the world's largest area for producing the Australian nut.

In 2018, the national agricultural authorities granted Lincang a geographical indication (GI) for its macadamia production. Then, the Australian nut became an agricultural product particular to the city.

After years of development, the macadamia product has diversified. The nuts were used as food only. But now, even their shells can be used to produce cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and other high value-added products.

With a dry-nut output of 78,000 tons, macadamia in Lincang increased local farmers' income and boosted its rural revitalization. The comprehensive output value reached 5.436 billion yuan in 2022, increasing the per-capita income of fruit farmers by 2,945 yuan.

At present, Lincang has set up a Yunnan nut trading center. With the “Internet plus big data" e-commerce platform, macadamia from Yunnan can reach global consumers.
