Known as the "most beautiful aquatic bird, the purple swamphen is spotted frequently in the Beihai wetland area of Tengchong, southwest Yunnan’s Baoshan city.

Under the second-class national protection, the bird has purple-blue feather, a very stout red bill, reddish legs, and a white undertail. The number of purple swamphens is extremely rare, and they are only seen in some areas of the Yunnan and Fujian provinces.
