The Kucong people of Lahu ethnic group in Zhedong township, southwest Yunnan’s Zhenyuan county, have been inheriting a bark-clothes making skill for generations. Now, this skill is on its way to be an intangible cultural heritage.

The inheritor of this skill is Lou Fuquan. Whenever he makes bark clothes, he will firstly cut the tree into meter-long logs and then peel the bark with a wooden hammer. Then the pieces of bark will be dried in a cool place. After the raw materials are prepared, he’ll use them to make clothes.

The cloth-making processes seem easy. But each process is revealing the wisdom of their ancestors. Sometimes, the maker fails because of a small mistake. The skill for making bark clothes has witnessed the historic changes that happened to Kucong people, who steeped into today’s socialist system from a primitive society.
