Pu'er is located in the southwest of China’s Yunnan, bordering on Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. The Lancang River (the section of Mekong River in China) runs through this vast land of 45,000 square kilometers from north to south, giving birth to 26 ethnic minorities in China, such as Hani, Yi, Lahu, Wa and Dai. The China-Laos Railway and Kunming-Bangkok Expressway pass through the city.

Pu'er city is the birthplace of tea in the world and the starting point of the Ancient Tea-horse Road. Pu'er tea is named after Pu'er city, home to 79,000 hectares of wild ancient tea trees, 13,000 hectares of ancient tea gardens and 129,000 hectares of modern tea gardens. At the same time, Pu'er has cultivated coffee for more than 100 years, and it is one of the earliest coffee growing areas in China, with a coffee plantation area of 45,000 hectares and an output of 55,000 tons. It is the main coffee producing area with the largest planting area, the highest output and the best quality and the main distribution center of coffee trade in China. Pu'er is known as "the world tea source" and "the coffee capital of China". In 2020, Pu'er tea and Pu'er coffee were listed in aChina-EU cooperationagreement onprotecting geographical indications.

Pu'er averages at 19.5℃ in annual temperature, with a forest coverage of 74.59%. Nearly one-third of the species in China are found in Pu'er, which is known as "palace of Yunnan fauna and flora" and "paradise of the world" by the UN Environment Programme. Asian elephant, western black crested gibbon, Indian bison, green peafowl and more rare species inhabit here. About 127 wild Asian elephants live in Pu 'er all the year round.
