The left-footed dance of the Yi nationality combines singing with dancing and is very entertaining to watch. In 2008, the left-footed dance was included in China's national intangible cultural heritage protection list.
Mouding county, located in central Yunnan's Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefecture, is known as the "home of left-footed dance of the Yi nationality."
In September 2022, the Mouding Experimental Primary School began choreographing the left-footed dance as setting-up exercises. This set of exercises made its debut in December after students’ over two months of practice. They held the typical Yi four-stringed instrument, danced with cheerful steps, and changed formation along with the music.
At present, students from grades three to six in the school have all learned this set of left-footed dance as exercises in class intervals. "Such setting-up exercises is funny and delightful. Both students and parents like it," said the school principal Peng Xingsheng.
