China-grown durians to hit domestic market
1,400 mu (about 0.93 square kilometers) of durian trees at the Yucai ecological zone in Sanya city, south China’s Hainan province, have born fruits. They will be marketed nationwide in June, with an expected yield of up to 3,500 kg/mu and an output value of more than 100,000 yuan per mu.

Chinese consumers love durian because of its unique flavor and texture, but most durian with good quality are imported. So, the price is usually high. This year, things may be different.
According to the Sanya agricultural authority, the city has introduced in durian varieties four years ago. After years of growing and domesticating, most durian trees are bearing fruits. At present, more than 10,000 mu (about 6.7 square kilometers) of durians are planted in Sanya districts.
Durians produced in Sanya are not only very sweet, but also enter the market freshly in a relatively shorter time, said the person in charge of the Sanya agricultural sector. "In another year or two, our durians will enter the full fruit period.”
The person added: “We are planning to spend three to five years to create a 50,000 mu durian industrial park. And we expect the output value will increase by 5 billion yuan by then."
China hardly produced durians though it had been a big consumer. The fresh durians were imported mostly from Thailand, with the volume exceeding that of cherries in 2019.
