More than 200,000 Chinese sturgeons, an endangered fish species, were recently released into the Yangtze River from Yichang city, central China’s Hubei province, in a bid to help increase the species' wild population.
The Chinese sturgeon is one of the eldest vertebrates on the earth. It is a typically rare fish under state protection in Yangtze River, highly valuable for scientific research and eco-conservation.
Before the release, scientists marked the mature Chinese sturgeons by satellite, so that they can evaluate the distribution of the species in the offshore sea of China, analyze the environmental elements that will affect their living, and acquire more data for their further research.
