"Smart transportation makes things much easier!"
Zhou Fengxue's everyday commute from home to Chongqing Yungu · Big Data Industrial Park is now by driver-less cars. She says, "Smart transportation is truly convenient!"
What is smart transportation? Imagine yourself calling a cab on the app. When the cab arrives, you click the "Confirmation" button on your phone, sit in the back seat with the seatbelt buckled, and then click the "Set off" button to start the car.
The driver's seat remains empty from departure to destination, yet the steering wheel turns autonomously. The self-driving vehicle not only recognizes traffic signals by itself but also gets around obstacles smoothly, maintaining a steady speed.
"There is a red light 100 meters ahead..." Accompanied by the screen prompt, the vehicle decelerates and stops at the traffic signal in a precise, smooth and timely way. The vehicle can receive and process information accurately before the signal light is visible to the naked human eyes, which adds a futuristic touch to the riding experience.
How does the vehicle "see" the traffic lights? Actually, a vehicle-road coordination system is installed at crossings, providing real-time updates about the overall road conditions for the vehicles, such as changes in traffic signals and traffic congestion. This system, therefore, makes automobiles sensible and well-informed.
Autonomous driving technology has also been applied to taxis and buses.
In Jiangxinzhou of Nanjing city, east China's Jiangsu province, driverless taxis and buses move orderly on the circular road, while driverless vending cars stop upon customers’ waving, allowing them to make purchases by scanning codes.
In the Xiong'an new area, north China's Hebei province, the "flexible bus" offers personalized, convenient transit for passengers through intelligent dispatching. Passengers can enjoy highly customized services without transfers.
Smart driving technology in China has developed significantly, which has not only been used in passenger transportation but also freight transportation.
The logistics driverless heavy-duty truck has been put into commercial operation at the Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor's commercial vehicle base in south China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. Driver-less trucks run efficiently day and night, transporting goods between warehouses and workshops, improving efficiency and lowering costs.
