Future media need to deal with changes, challenges

The 5th World Media Summit (Yunnan, China) and the 2nd Yunnan International Communication Forum opened in central Yunnan’s Kunming city on December 5.

More than 300 participants, including 80 plus international media chiefs, scholars from universities, specialists from research institutions and business representatives, had in-depth discussions themed on "Boosting Global Confidence, Promoting Media Development".

With rapid progress in information technology, the public opinion, the media layout and the communicating mode have all gone through big changes, and the future development of media was high on the agenda.

Kiril Valchev, director general of Bulgarian News Agency, elaborated on the importance of "maintaining vigor" in his speech. He also mentioned that rational application of new technologies would improve media efficiency.

Bekdurdy Amansaryyev, CEO of Information Agency "Media Turkmen", stressed the need to build trust between the media and the audience. “While new technologies bring development opportunities to the media industry, they also give rise to problems and challenges.”

Sivanxay Siphankham, deputy director of Lao News Agency, said news media should adapt to the ever-changing realities, using new technologies for quality media products, improving media ability to resist risks and cultivating high-caliber talents.

According to Muhammad Aslam Khan, editor-in-chief of Internews Pakistan, the constantly-updated technology is reshaping the news industry. While bringing us opportunities, technology also poses new challenges, such as the disinformation that undermines media credibility. He said joint pursuit of the Belt and Road Initiative is conducive to more consensus from the parties for innovative media development.

The summit participants agreed that with the profound changes unseen in a century and the increase of uncertainties, the media need to cooperate with each other to adapt to new changes more than ever before. On the same day, the Kunming Initiative of the fifth World Media Summit (Yunnan, China) was adopted and released.

The initiative says the media should make rational use of 5G, big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other information revolution development achievements, innovate news collection and dissemination models, accelerate intelligent and digital transformation, and continue to promote the economic and social development of countries worldwide.
